Paper Everyday-Carry: Notebooks Worth Keeping in Your Bag

A6 notebooks

The best notebook isn't the most beautiful one on your shelf. It's the one that's in your bag when you need it. An idea, a name, a shopping list, a thing you must not forget — they never arrive when you're sat at your desk. They arrive on the bus, in a queue, halfway across town.

Small sets, so there's always one going

Buying notebooks in small sets is the trick — you're never caught with a full one and no spare, and you can leave them in different places. Pocket-sized A6 notebooks come in threes; a slightly larger A5 pair suits people who like more room per page; and a set of colourful A6s is another easy way to always have one going.

Keep the loose bits together

A notebook rattling around loose with keys and a water bottle doesn't last. A small box keeps the little stuff — notes, cards, odds and ends — in one findable spot, and a slim pencil case does the same for your pens. Then carry it, and use it the second a thought lands — don't tell yourself you'll remember, because you won't. A caught thought on paper is worth ten that got away.
