The Analog Desk Setup

A calm desk isn't a matter of a bigger monitor or a fancier chair. It's mostly about removing friction and noise — and a few small analog tools do that better than any app.
A pad that lives on the desk
The single most useful thing on my desk is a pad for thinking on — not a document, not an app, just a surface to scribble and plan on while I'm on a call or working something out. A desk pad keeps the stray thoughts off my screen and out of my head.
The week where you can see it
Your calendar lives on your laptop, sure. But a small desk calendar you can glance at — without opening anything, without getting pulled into email on the way — keeps the week in view and your focus intact.
A home for the small stuff
Loose pens rolling around is its own small chaos. A pencil case keeps the good ones together and comes with you if you work in more than one place (there's a slimmer version if you carry less). Finish with two things that do more than they should: an candle holder for the last hour of work, and a mug you like the weight of. Keep a list pad within reach for the day's three things, and you've got a handful of objects doing what a dozen browser tabs can't.
